Siyum wins on debut, Otero triumphs in women’s race
Manazot Siyum won the 34th edition of the Leiden Marathon on Sunday. The twenty-year-old Ethiopian pulled away from the competition early on and eventually finished in 2:12.50, eleven seconds above the course record.
Wilfred Kemboi from Kenya crossed the finish line second after 2 hours, 15 minutes and 28 seconds. The battle for bronze was particularly exciting. Dutch top runner Khalid Choukoud (2:16.29) just fell short in the final sprint against Asbel Kiprop, also from Kenya.
In the women’s race, victory went to Kenyan Gladys Otero in a time of 2:45.37. She was no less than ten minutes faster than runner-up Cana Lee Peek from South Africa: 2:55.37. Lotte Soeters finished third with 2:56.07.
